Hiding Featured Images for Blog Posts in WordPress: A Complete Guide

Most WordPress themes are designed to include a featured image for every blog post or page by default. Even when you haven’t set a featured image, it will use any image from your media gallery. At times, this may look inappropriate and embarrassing.

There are ways you can hide the featured image in WordPress. In this article, learn about those ways in greater detail.

Use the Conditionally Display Featured Image plugin

The easiest way to hide the featured image for a certain post in WordPress is to use the Conditionally Display Featured Image plugin. This is a free plugin that adds a checkbox to the featured image panel. In case you’re using the classic editor, it will add it to the meta box. You can hide the featured image simply by ticking the box.

To get started, you need to install and activate the Conditionally Display Featured Image plugin. Install it from the WordPress plugin directory and activate it.

Then follow the following steps:
  • Go to Posts > All Posts
  • Select the post for which you want to disable the featured image
  • Find the ‘Featured Image’ option from the post edit screen and expand it
  • Tick the box that reads ‘Display featured image in posts lists only, hide on singular views’
  • Tap on the Update button
This would make the necessary changes and remove the featured image from that particular blog post. Repeat the process for other blog posts where you don’t want the featured image.

Please note that the plugin does not delete the featured image. It simply hides it from the web visitors.
