Website success – How will decide the success of the website? It is entirely based on the website performance and speed. You may add more content and more images to the website often to bring more visitors right! More storage more consumption of data may affect your website. It may reduce the speed as well as the performance of the website.

Here, in Joomla, we are trying to improve the speed. Many said, “Joomla is basically slow in nature”. But in reality, Joomla has much positivity and gives space to improve the website speed.

Here are the ways to improve website speed:
  • Keep doing regular updates and look onto the extension without fail.
  • Work on caches of Joomla.
  • Do enablement on compression of Joomla
  • Adding the rules for optimizing .htaccess.
  • Keep the image size as small as possible.
  • If you are not using any extension, kindly remove it from the list.
  • Do use extensions for optimization
Keep doing regular updates and look onto the extension without fail: At regular intervals, Joomla releases its new version without fail. The new versions consist of improvements in codes which results in speeding up your website. When you look at the newly released version of Joomla, the features may look small than the older ones.

So, to improve the website performance kindly updates the newer version as soon as possible.

Work on caches of Joomla: Visitors involvement in Joomla is countless. It has more and more responsibilities like data from database retrieving process, plugin load, installation of module and component, template file load etc. All these functions have to perform from one page and so, the Joomla need another set of energy right!

It's like an equal array between the cache and visitor. Cache has to be enabled whenever the visitor visits a website. By a quick process, it gets all details from an HTML file. If you need more speed in Joomla then don’t ignore enabling the cache.

Step 1: Go to the dashboard of Joomla and then select the tab “System”. Select the second option “Global configuration”.

Step 2: To work on cache, go to the tab “System”. On the right side of the page, you can see the settings of cache. Here are the options such as off–caching disabled, on–conservative caching and on-progressive caching.

Step 3: Select the second option “ON – Conservative caching”. Do compare the two types of caching processes such as conservative and progressive. Progressive work is entirely different from one another which help to store the cache whenever the visitors visits a website.

Step 4: Once if you work on the conservative cache don’t forget to save all your process. Now, go to the tab “Extensions” and then select “Plugin Manager”.

Step 5: You can see more plugins installed one by one. Type as “Cache” in the search field and then tap on the button magnifying glass.

Step 6: By now, the system-cache plugin will be displayed in front of you. Do enable on the system cache plugin!

The cache system is enabled now!

Do enablement on compression of Joomla: A website performance is entirely based on the page loads. A bigger website is loaded and compressed properly when you enable Joomla compression. Compression helps to reduce the work and gives you a quick response.

Step 1: Go to the tab “System” and then select “Global configuration”. In the global configuration, click on the tab “Server” and then search for the label “Gzip page compression”.

Step 2: Tap the button “Yes” and activate Joomla Gzip compression. If the button is in green colour then you can make sure that compression is successfully enabled.

And then, don’t forget to save all the changes made till now.

Sometimes you may get an error while using Gzip compression.

Adding the rules for optimizing.htaccess: One of the best methods to improve Joomla speed is .htaccess. You can ask why? By adding rules at the .htaccess file end it helps to improve the speed of the Joomla website.
  • ETag – It is a rule which helps to get the image retrieved from the cache you enabled already. No need to take from the server end instead use cache.
  • Expires headers – Keeping the expiry time for the file is very important in Joomla. This rule helps you to set expiry time and so, you can see the features of ETag.
  • AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE – Usually, the HTML file have some spaces, breaks and empty lines. This rule helps you to take away all the space, breaks and empty lines.
Code:
########## Begin - ETag Optimization

## This rule will create an ETag for files based only on the modification

## timestamp and their size.

## Note: It may cause problems on your server and you may need to remove it
FileETag MTime Size

# AddOutputFilterByType is now deprecated by Apache. Use mod_filter in the future.

AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain text/html text/xml text/css application/xml application/xhtml+xml application/rss+xml application/javascript application/x-javascript

Keep the image size as small as possible: Don’t try to use bigger images because the browser usually spends more and more time scaling the images. The image you view in the browser may be different while comparing with reality. Reduction of size is different and reducing the quality is different. Sometimes, while lowering the image size quality of the image too get affected.

Don’t try overloading more images on one page itself. We recommend you split the images into two or more pages.

If you are not using any extension, kindly remove it from the list: Joomla extension runs with the help of the database, disk space and system resource. If you add more extensions it would affect the website size. Use the extension that is in only use or else deletes the unwanted extension in Joomla.

You would be installing more components, modules and plugins. Sometimes, you would forgot to delete all those features when you complete work. It may consume more space on the website. So, try to delete unwanted extensions without hesitation.

Do use extensions for optimization:
  • JCH Optimize – You can see the combination of CSS and JavaScript extensions. Mingle the images into minifies and sprites also do JavaScript compress too!
  • Jbetolo – Along with the support of CDN, you can see the JCH optimization combination here.
  • JotCache – This JotCache extension helps to work on the cache system of Joomla.
  • Cache Cleaner – From the admin panel, you can clean the cache system using this extension.
Hence, do try to speed up the website performance by the above-mentioned steps.
