How To: Change the default maximum transmission unit (MTU) size settings for PPP connections or VPN connections
For PPL connection, Microsoft versions like Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 use 1500 bytes MTU size and for VPN connection, it uses 1400 bytes. These bytes are considered as the default settings for remote access & routing.
Listing out PPN and VPN connections such as:
In this article, we are going to learn on the MTU size transmission unit for PPN connections and VPN connections.
PPN connection MTU settings: You have two options here to fix the change in the MTU setting in the PPN connection. Here’s an easy fix and let me fix it myself:
Here’s an easy fix:
Step 1: Tap on the button “download”. You can see the option run or open in the dialog box “file download”.
Step 2: It will ask you to enter the MTU size from 1 to 15oo in the middle of the installation.
Step 3: Moreover, the language-oriented here is English. When it comes to the Windows version, the automatic fix also recommended.
Step 4: If you are not using the problem computer then there is a chance to fix the solution directly towards the flash drive. So, that it would be easy for you to run it on the problem computer.
Let me fix it myself:
Add the values like ProtocolMTU DWORD value, PPPProtocolType DWORD value, and ProtocolType DWORD value to the key of registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0
You should be very conscious while modifying the registry. If any problem exists then it may remain the same throughout the specifications. So, backing up the registry is important before starting up the modification.
Here’s the step to backup and restoration of registry Windows:
Step 1: Tap on the start button and then go running. Type inside the open box as “Regedit” and finally tap on the button OK.
Step 2: Add the below command such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
Step 3: Now, go to the menu “edit” and then to “New”. Tap on the key to enter the protocols and finally give enter. By doing this, you can add the protocols subkey.
Step 4: In this step, you going to add 0 to the protocol subkey created in step 3. So, tap on the created protocol subkey and then go to the menu “edit”. Search where the New option exists to tap on the key.
Step 5: Enter zero (0) and give a click on the enter option. You have created the subkey zero now! Again, tap on the protocol subkey 0. Edit> New> Enter DWORD value.
Step 6: Go to the box “Value data” and then enter ProtocolType finally OK. In the menu “edit” choose the option “Modify”.
Step 7: In the box “Value data” enter the value as 800 and cross-check the base for Hexadecimal enable. Tap on OK!
Step 8: In the menu “edit”, choose the option “New” and then DWORD Value. Enter PPPProtocolType and finally tap on the enter button.
Step 9: In the menu “edit”, choose the option “Modify”. Again, in the box “value data” cross-check the base selection is Hexadecimal finally tap on OK button.
Step 10: Enter ProtocolMTU and tap on the button “Enter”. Go to the menu “edit” and tap the option “Modify”.
Step 11: Here, the base selection should be decimal so that you can type MTU size as per your requirement. Finally, click OK.
Step 12: Come out from the Registry editor and its time to restart your computer again.
VPN connection MTU size settings:
Here too, you deal two sections such as here’s a fix and let me fix it myself in changing the MTU size settings in VPN connection.
Here’s a fix:
Tap on the download button to get into a run or open box in the dialog box “file download”.
As said previously, in the middle of the installation process it will ask you to enter the MTU size from 1 to 1500. The language here is English and tries to save the fixed solution directly to flash drive. Later, you can execute it on the problem computer.
Let me fix it myself:
Here, you need to add the values in the key of registries like TunnelMTU DWORD value, PPPProtocolType DWORD value, and ProtocolTypeDWORD value.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0
It must take the backup for the registry! There should be no interruption in the middle of registry modification. Let us learn to take a backup of the registry as below mentioned steps:
Step 1: Tap on the button “Start” and then go running. In the run box, enter the word as “Regedit” and finally tap on the button “OK”.
Step 2: Add the statement as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
Step 3: To add the Protocols subkey go to edit and then new. You can see the option “Key” to enter the protocols. Finally, give enter.
Step 4: Tap on the protocols subkey created in the previous step. Now, follow the process Edit> New> Key> Type zero > Enter.
Step 5: Tap the subkey zero created just before. Follow the process Edit > New >DWORD value.
Step 6: Go the box “Value data” and then enter ProtocolType. Tap on the button “OK”.
Step 7: Again, go to the menu “edit” and then “Modify”. Go to the box “Value data” enter the number as 800. Check the base selection is Hexadecimal and tap on OK.
Step 8: Go to the menu “edit” and then to new. From the new option, you can see the value DWORD value. Tap on it!
Step 9: Enter PPPProtocolType and give enter. Go to the menu “edit” and then choose “Modify”. In the box “Value data” enter the number 21 and check the base selection is hexadecimal. Finally Ok button.
Step 10: Go to edit and then new. Tap on the value “DWORD value” and enter TunnelMTU. Tap the OK button.
Step 11: Go to edit and then modify but here you need to select the base selection as a decimal. Enter the MTU size as per your concern and then enter quit.
Step 12: Your computer will restart now!
We have now changed the MTU size value in both PPN and VPN connection. Handle it carefully while modifying the registry.
For PPL connection, Microsoft versions like Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 use 1500 bytes MTU size and for VPN connection, it uses 1400 bytes. These bytes are considered as the default settings for remote access & routing.
